Kazuo Shiraga, known for his dynamic ‘performance paintings’, was a pivotal member of the remarkable avant-garde art collective Gutai Bijutsu Kyokai. As Japan’s first radical postwar artistic movement, the Gutai group rejected tradition in favor of performative expression and physical engagement with a wide variety of techniques and materials. Kazuo Shiraga (白髪 一雄, Shiraga Kazuo, August 12, 1924 – April 8, 2008) was a Japanese modern artist who belonged to the Gutai group of avant-garde artists. He was acknowledged internationally only after his death. In the 1940s he studied Nihonga at the Kyoto City University of Arts.

The breakout star of the Gutai Art Association, Shiraga became colloquially known as the “foot painter”; the Japanese postwar movement’s founder, Jiro Yoshihara, even dismissed Shiraga as a “nobody, if he didn’t paint with his feet.” Kazuo Shiraga also obtained a position as professor of art history at the University of Osaka during the 1960s. Kazuo Shiraga became a monk at Enryaku-ji in 1971, a Buddhist monastery on Mount Hiei.
